The Score Report

The CAEL Assessment Score Report provides a profile of English proficiency in the four skills of academic listening, reading, writing and speaking.

CAEL Assessment results range from band level 10 to band level 90. Each band score corresponds to a descriptive statement summarizing the level of English of a test taker.

Fluent: Communicates accurately and effectively in all professional and academic settings.
80
Expert: Demonstrates a high level of competence. Language is accurate and flexible in unfamiliar settings.
70
Adept: Uses generally accurate language in most settings. Some limitations in flexibility are evident.
60
Advanced: Displays competence in academic or professional settings.
50
High Intermediate: Exhibits some competence in academic or professional settings; communication may break down in places.
40
Intermediate: Demonstrates some ability to comprehend and articulate complex ideas and arguments typical of academic or professional settings..
30
High Beginner: Expresses basic ideas about familiar topics in routine settings.

Low Beginner: Communicates with limited ability.

How are the band scores interpreted?

CAEL Assessment test results are maintained in strictest confidentiality. Official score reports are released to other institutions only upon receipt of written request of the test taker. To ensure the authenticity of CAEL Assessment score reports, institutions are urged to require official copies to be mailed directly from the CAEL Assessment Office.

All testing materials are the property of the CAEL Office.

How long is my CAEL Assessment result valid?

Test results are valid for two years.


How do I forward my results?

Your results may be sent to ten institutions free of charge. Provide these details when you complete the online registration form.


How can I be sure that the universities to which I've applied receive my result?

  • If you are applying to an undergraduate program, your result will automatically be communicated to the undergraduate admissions office at the universities to which you are applying (as indicated on your registration form). Be sure to provide your student ID number at each institution.

  • If you are applying to a graduate program (Master's or Doctorate), your result will be forwarded to the appropriate department at each university (as indicated on your registration form). Be sure to provide your student ID number at each institution.
