CAEL Assessment Policies

1. CAEL Assessment Re-write Policy

There are no restrictions on how frequently you can write the CAEL Assessment.

2. Photo Policy for Registration

You must provide a recent passport-size photo (3 months) which you will give to the staff at the Test Centre when presenting your Proof of Registration on the day of the test.

You may be asked to present a new photograph if the following applies:

  • The length, colour, or style of your hair has changed

  • Any difference in facial hair

3. Acceptable Identification

A valid Passport OR two pieces of official photo identification issued by a government agency within Canada (e.g. a National Identity Card, a driver's licence, CSIC membership card etc.). At least one must contain a recent recognizable photograph and signature. University student cards are NOT acceptable.

You must bring to the Oral Language Test AND the written test the same identification that you listed when you registered online.

On the day of the test, if you do not have the proper identification as outlined above, you will be required to register again and pay another registration fee.


4. In the Testing Room

You must have your ID and Proof of Registration at your desk. No food or drinks are permitted in the testing room except under doctor's orders and with pre-approval from the CAEL Office.

No hats, coats or bags are permitted in the testing room. No pencil cases, glasses cases or any other small cases are permitted at your desk. You must leave your belongings outside the testing room.

Papers or electronic devices of any sort (including, but not limited to, digital watches, cell phones, electronic dictionairies and electronic pens or pencils) are not permitted in the testing room. Possession of any of these items in the testing room is classified as a violation and your test results may not be released.

5. Refunds

You may be eligible for a refund if you inform the CAEL Assessment Office, in writing, no later than 2 business days before the test date for which you have registered. Refunds will not be given if you do not follow proper registration procedures or fail to bring required documentation on the day of the test. The refund is your registration fee less a $60.00 administration fee.


6. Rescheduling your testing date or location

You must reschedule your CAEL Assessment no later than 2 business days prior to the test date (not including the day of the test). For example, the deadline to reschedule a Saturday test is Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. EST. If your request is not received at least 2 business days in advance, the CAEL Office may forfeit your full registration fee.

The fee for rescheduling is $60.00.To reschedule, complete the following form and forward to the CAEL Office.


7. Cancelling your testing date

You must cancel your CAEL Assessment no later than 2 business days prior to the test date (not including the day of the test). For example, the deadline to cancel a Saturday test is Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. EST. If your request is not received at least 2 business days in advance, the CAEL Office may forfeit your full registration fee.

Test takers who cancel their registration may be entitled to a partial refund.



The CAEL Office reserves the right to refuse registration applications.
