How To Prepare For The CAEL Assessment

Preparing for Task 1 of the Oral Language Test (OLT)

Task 1 of the Oral Language Test evaluates your ability to make a prepared informal talk about a familiar topic (yourself).

When the test begins, the instructor will ask you to discuss either

     a. what you plan to study at university and why
                                      OR
     b. your experience learning English for academic purposes

  • You should prepare the answers to both the questions listed above before the test.

  • You should spend some time thinking about what you want to say to answer each question.

  • You will have one minute to record the answer to the question, so be sure to prepare enough information to speak for one minute.

  • Do not try to include so much information that you feel you have to speak very quickly to say it all.

  • You should practice speaking your answers to both questions aloud, timing yourself for one minute. The more you practice your answers, the more fluent your response on the test will be.

Be sure to listen carefully to the instructions for the first task. The instructor will tell you at this time which question you will be required to answer.

Remember:

YOU MUST NOT HAVE ANY NOTES WITH YOU WHEN YOU ARE TAKING THE TEST.
