What is
the PreCAEL Academic Diagnostic and Placement Test?
The purpose of the PreCAEL
ADAPT is to give test takers information about their strengths and weaknesses
in English. It is a “diagnostic” test. Test takers can use
the information from the test to help them both to prepare to take the
CAEL Assessment and to identify the English skills and strategies that
need further development.
When test takers take the
PreCAEL ADAPT they receive information about the skills or strategies
in academic reading, listening, writing and speaking, which they will
need to improve. They also learn which skills and strategies are working
well. Test takers will receive immediate feedback on their performance,
because the test is marked by the test administrator on the spot.
There are both easy and difficult
versions of the PreCAEL ADAPT. Test takers are encouraged to try more
than one version. The easiest tests are at the band 10 level (for beginning
levels of academic English). The most difficult tests are at the band
40 level (for intermediate levels of academic English). If a test taker
scores at the band 40 level, they may want to try the CAEL Assessment.
It takes about an hour to complete a PreCAEL ADAPT.
The PreCAEL
ADAPT is used for learning purposes only. It cannot be used for admission
to university or college programs. In some language schools PreCAEL
ADAPT scores may be used to place students at different levels of the
program.
